Listerine Mouthwash for Nail Fungus

listerinemouthwash.jpg Using Listerine to Cure Nail Fungus (onychomycosis) is one of those alternative home remedy treatments that may work.

Some swear by it, others not. But as it is such an inexpensive alternative to prescription drugs without the possible side effects some people give it a shot to see what happens.

As with many other alternative treatments there is no scientific backup as this product was not created to treat nail fungus. Listerine may help but probably not cure it.

So Why Do People Try Listerine?

Many know Listerine as a powerful antiseptic mouthwash that fights bacteria that causes bad breath.

Listed on the back of the bottle is an ingredient called Thymol. Thymol is found in the oil of thyme and is the ingredient that makes the argument that Listerine may just work in killing toenail fungus.

Ancient Egyptians used Thymol and Carvacol from the thyme plant to preserve mummies because they knew of the ability of Thymol to kill bacteria and fungi.

Thymol is extracted as a white crystalline substance that has strong antiseptic properties and a pleasant aromatic odour. Thymol is only slightly soluble in water, but it is extremely soluble in alcohols and other organic solvents. Hence Listerine's alcohol base.

Keep in mind that Listerine was not developed to treat nail fungus. It was originally developed many years ago as an antiseptic for hospitals and surgery rooms. Even marketed later as a floor cleaner. Today it is commonly used to kill bacteria in your mouth and on your tongue that causes bad breath.

Due to Listerine's fluidly nature and inability to penetrate the nail to where the fungus is hiding gives doubt to its effectiveness. It is also quite unclear which Listerine variant works as it comes in a few different colours and flavours.

Contrary to this there are two main methods to use Listerine to cure nail fungus. Whichever method you choose be prepared to keep it up for quite a while.

  • Firstly, soaking your hands and feet in a bath,
  • Second, applying a neat concentration directly on the nail.

Using a Listerine Bath

If you use the bath method be prepared to do it every day and never skip a day. This approach will become expensive because of the continued need for more Listerine. The frequency at which the Listerine is changed between soaking sessions is also known to be inconsistent as this depends on how advanced the fungal infection is.

Within a month or two you should notice some signs of new nail growing if you are successful. Don't stop using the Listerine bath method until an entire new nail has grown forcing the fungus out, and looks healthy.

Some find better results when mixed 50/50 with Listerine and Apple Cider Vinegar to create an acidic environment. Fungus does not grow well in acid conditions. The perfect mix is just trial and error so just aim for 50/50. Remember to test your feet for a reaction before you commit long term to this procedure.

White vinegar can also be used but Apple Cider Vinegar is better.

You will need to spend at least 30 minutes per day, every day, so ensure you are able to keep yourself occupied and/or not disturbed.

Things You Need:

  • Listerine
  • Apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • A large bowl/container
  • A spray bottle

Instructions:

You can treat your fingernails and your toenails in the same manner.

Step 1 – Wash your feet thoroughly using an antifungal soap if possible.

Step 2 - Pour a generous amount of Listerine in a bowl, and combine with apple cider vinegar if you wish. Ensure there is enough to cover your toes.

Step 3 – Soak your toes in the Listerine for at least 30 minutes, or as long as possible for faster results.

Step 4 – Air dry your toes, or use a hair dryer to speed up this process. Avoid using towels or mats as you simply could reinfect your nails again, unless you use clean fresh towels each time.

Step 5 – In the morning apply a coating to your toe nails with the spray bottle filled with the Listerine, including the vinegar if you wish. Applying more often throughout the day will increase your success.

Step 6 – Let your toes dry before you put on your socks.

Step 7 – Repeat steps 1-6 each night for at least 3-6 weeks looking for an early visual change of a new nail emerging.

If there are signs of success then continue until the infected nail has grown out completely. If not seek an alternative method as you are just wasting your effort, time and money. Zeta Clear is simply a brush on application once a day – that's it.

ZetaClear is a Natural Homeopathic FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) registered treatment specifically for curing nail fungus.

Applying Directly on the Nail

The second alternative method is to apply Listerine, or the 50/50 mix with apple cider vinegar, directly to the nail several times each day. First test this on one of your nails for a day to test for a reaction.

There are three methods that can be used here:

  • Apply to your nail using a cotton-tipped applicator or cotton ball.
  • Fill an old nail varnish bottle and use the brush attached to the lid as the applicator.
  • Apply three drops to a gauzed bandaid using a drop applicator and wrap the bandaid around your nail. This method keeps your nail cleaner and continually soaked for a longer period. Remove the bandaid when you think the Listerine has dissipated.

Side Effect of Using Listerine

  • As Listerine is a mouthwash designed to be rinsed throughout your mouth side effects would be rare.
  • Applying Listerine directly onto your nails should not produce any side effects as there would be virtually no absorption. Your nails are tightly packed with dead cells designed to prevent absorption and penetration. This is obviously why Listerine takes so long to cure fungus, if at all.
  • The only potential problem to be aware of is that if you use the soak method your feet may change colour. Depending on the colour of the Listerine mix you choose is to the colour your skin may change to. This colour change will be temporary for a week or two.
  • Listerine is also alcohol based. So if you have any cuts or abrasions on your feet you will quickly know about them.

How to Improve Your Success

  • Trim your nails and file away as much of the infected nail to help with the Listerine penetration.
  • Consistency and frequency will be the key to the success of this treatment.
  • As with many other alternative methods your success is improved with good hygiene practices. Basically keep your feet as dry as possible and wear open toes and change your socks twice a day of possible.

What You Need to Consider

As Listerine was not designed to cure nail fungus don't get high hopes or expectations. Many people who have had success claim it took many many months and up to two years, admittedly much longer than a prescription drug could have taken.

The Listerine approach does take a lot of time each day and the cost will add up quite quickly so be prepared.

There are many other products of the market that claim to cure fungus within weeks. This is not possible as your fingernails only grow about 2-3mm per month, and your toenails about 1mm per month. A full cure is when the signs of fungus have completely grown out and the nail looks healthy again. Still there is no guarantee the fungus will not return.

As already mentioned and obviously promoted within this website is a product called Zeta Clear. This product has shown much more consistency and endless proven testimonials of cures.

ZetaClear is a Natural Homeopathic FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) registered treatment specifically for curing nail fungus.

I honestly don't know why people bother with alternative treatments when this product has such a great reputation at such a great price.

If you would like to know more details about this product you can find Zeta's website here. The product comes with a 90 day guarantee so why not give it a try and say goodbye to nail fungus forever.
